THE FUTURE OF FOOD BIOTECHNOLOGY

Terry D. Etherton

INTRODUCTION

Scientists have made impressive strides in developing new biotechnologies for agriculture since the onset of the modern era of biotechnology in 1973 (reviewed in Metabolic Modifiers, 1994; Etherton et al., 2003, American Dietetic Association, 2006). Biotechnologies that enhance productivity and productive efficiency (feed consumed/unit of output) have been developed and approved for commercial use. Development and adoption of novel biotechnologies will be crucial in meeting the challenge of producing enough food for a growing world population while minimizing and reducing impacts on the environment (reviewed in Metabolic Modifiers, 1994). Food Costs Increase and the Smoke and Mirrors of rbST-Free Milk Marketing Rolls On

Terry Etherton

The latest American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) Marketbasket Survey was released in July, 2007. The informal survey shows the total cost of 16 basic grocery items in the second quarter of 2007 was $42.95, up about 4 percent or $1.61 from the first quarter of 2007. A total of 82 volunteer shoppers in 32 states participated in the latest survey, conducted during May. Of the 16 items surveyed, 14 increased, one decreased and one stayed the same in average price compared to the 2007 first-quarter survey. Compared to one year ago, the overall cost for the marketbasket items showed an increase of about 8 percent. Regular whole milk showed the largest quarter-to-quarter price increase, up 34 cents to $3.46 per gallon. Read the rest of this entry »

rbST Bomb Drops in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania

Daniel Brandt
Lebanon County Dairy Farmer

I got a bombshell dropped on me this past week when my milk inspector stopped by and said they had a meeting at our dairy (Swiss Premium Dairy, formerly Wengerts Dairy in Lebanon, PA), and have made a final decision to go 100% rBST free. As you may know, our dairy is owned by Dean Foods. They have targeted October 1st as the latest cutoff date to have no producers using rBST. Upon further questioning I was informed that 3 of their largest retailers are requesting rBST-free milk and threatening to pull their product if they don’t comply. At the same time our processor has developed a fine reputation in this area for the great product they supply from local well-kept and run dairy farms. They also said they will not compensate farmers in any way for giving up their right to use this safe, approved product. They admitted the public hasn’t given much pressure yet but this is business and you have to stay ahead of the ball. Read the rest of this entry »
